The Awe of Homemade Sauce…

I am Scottish. We do not make our own tomato sauce. I am the daughter of a single mother who went to school full time. We grew up on hamburger helper.

So you have to understand why I think Ragu from a jar is just as good as the homemade stuff!

My boyfriend is Italian. Every Sunday his mom makes sauce over the stove. She freezes it and he takes it to grad school with him.

I eat Ragu.

Tonight I am going to attempt to make some homemade sauce. Not because I think it’ll be way better, but because I have to see what all the hype is about. Is it really worth making your own? I’ve eaten homemade sauce before, and it’s delicious, but the act of making it doesn’t seem overly enjoyable. I don’t picture myself home on Sundays making sauce.

My boyfriend laughs when people eat sauce out of a jar. But how is it different from eating biscuits from a can? Or pasta out of the box? (both of which he does).

I get that there’s the Italian family tradition stuff that I just didn’t grow up with. But is it all about tradition? Or is it truly that their sauce is just that much better?

Guess I’ll find out tonight….
